At first, I thought we mostly had that covered. Boy, oh boy, was I wrong. The deeper we delve into the project, the more I realize just how much crap we've accumulated in roughly 5.5 years of wedded bliss. I try to think of simpler times; when we lived in our 500 square foot apartment with one teeny-tiny storage closet. Then I remember that back then we did not have children or a home business. Still, though, we have too. much. stuff.
And that's what it is: stuff. Junk. Things we're just never going to use. And we're not even the hang-on-to-this-'cause-we-might-need-it-in-25-years types. We're pretty open to just tossing, selling, or donating. But still, somehow, we have junk in this house.
I think it started when we purchased this 1,000 square foot mansion. Believe me, when you double your living quarters, it sure feels like a mansion. Back then, we had a spare room (aka: dump anything and everything in there and just shut the door) and an office, but sans home-based business. Talk about space.
Our home, circa 2006. |
Well, when you have space, you just fill it, you know? Boy, do we know. We are really good at filling space. And we have generous families. They gave us new furniture as gifts and really great used furniture they were done with. Pretty soon, we had tons of furniture. Nice furniture. Furniture that traditionally, we'd hang on to until we're dead and then our kids would have to deal with it. These pictures make us look like hoarders or something. We're not! We started as fairly organized people, I swear.

The office, right before I filled 5 (yes, 5) garbage bags full of stuff we don't have anymore. |
So we're letting it go. And guess what we've found? We have a home that is totally big enough for us, with plenty of storage. We're organized, we're happy, and our home feels calm and inviting.
Less really is more.

Your post reminded me of a book I just read that is fabulous called "The Not So Big House". Have you read it? It is so good I am starting "The Not So Big Life" by the same author. A friend of mine posted about the same thing here: http://www.vanessachristenson.com/2010/07/get-crap-out-of-my-house-challenge.html
I am doing something similar of getting rid of junk and making my apartment more me (since we are going to be here awhile more).
Congratulations on what you've done and good luck!
Man I feel so motivated now!! I wish you had motivated me like this a few months ago! That is so awesome. It does feel nice to reclaim space that was once yours. Way to go!
we are very streamlined over here. always have been, always will be. i have NEVER understood the appeal of "stuff."
Abbey, you need to post pictures of your house... on the inside. We live in a 1200 sq ft apartment and I am losing my mind trying to fit our stuff in. Do you have a basement?
Leslie, I would commit a serious felony to have a basement. I really would. I'll have to get some pics up of our 'creative' storage system.
I love this post, Ab. I feel really strongly about a clean, sparse house - it feels better to me. But, I DO NOT JUDGE others. . .I really could care less about anyone's house looks like, but mine. Because I am in charge of the feeling in my home, not in others' homes. I say this because I read blogs that always talk about how the best moms are the ones with the dirtiest houses. .. and, I suppose I am venting here. . .but, really? I suppose I understand what they think they're saying: Moms who are so busy playing with their children don't have time to clean. But, I will simply disagree. I guess I take that a little personal because I try so hard to keep my house clean so that there is a atmosphere of order and love. IT'S NOT PERFECT by any means. But, I try so hard. And, I play with my well-adjusted children who cherish me, their father, each other and God. . and, I shouldn't feel guilty about this. Thanks for providing me a platform to vent. :) Good luck on your home! I am in the same process here and it's occasionally overwhelming, but one bag a day is a great idea! thanks!
