There are so many photos, even those taken with a simple point-and-shoot camera, that can be drastically improved with a little editing.

I think it's amazing how your skills have grown and what image editing can do. At some point I'm reminded of the spoof video http://www.refinery29.com/fotoshop-by-adobe-video-spoof and wonder where the line is and what message we are really passing on. I wish you well in your endeavors.
